Climb to an altitude of 1,000 metres to explore the former Cipollino marble quarry. You’ll be amazed by its history, its global significance and its natural beauty.
Discovered in 1832, Saillon marble gained its international reputation from 1873 onwards thanks to its ‘cipolin’ variety – an ivory-coloured marble veined with green and purple. The Opéra Garnier in Paris, the British Museum in London and the US Custom House in New York are just a few of the buildings around the world that have used it.
Important: for safety reasons, you must not enter the quarry. You can admire it from the outside, whilst remaining behind the barriers.

Practical information
Parking your car
Park your vehicle in the free car parks:
- Pont de Cleusette, situated at the foot of the road leading up to the quarry.
- Place des Moilles, a 15-minute walk from the path leading up to the quarry.
- Place Farinet, a 20-minute walk from the path leading up to the quarry.
Travelling by public transport
Take bus 311 from Martigny CFF, Riddes CFF or Sion CFF stations to the Saillon les Moilles stop. Walk for 15 minutes to the Pont de Cleusette, where the climb begins. Find the timetables here.

There are benches and a low picnic table in front of the quarry.
